Box hedging in Thanet: three myths that keep costing gardens money.

I lose count of how many times I have quoted for removing a dead box hedge in Ramsgate or Cliftonville, only for the owner to tell me they are planning to replace it with new box plants. The old hedge died from box blight. The new plants will too. Three myths keep this cycle going, and between them they account for a lot of wasted money in Margate CT9, Cliftonville, Broadstairs CT10, and Ramsgate CT11/CT12.

Myth 1: "Box blight is treatable. The hedge will recover with fungicide."

The pathogen responsible is Cylindrocladium buxicola (also classified as Calonectria pseudonaviculata). It was first confirmed in the UK in 1998 and is now endemic across southern England. The symptoms are the ones you know: brown patches, leaf drop, bare stems, the whole hedge going from green to skeletal over a single wet summer.

The RHS position as of 2025 is unambiguous: no amateur-accessible fungicide provides reliable long-term suppression of the disease. Fungicide applications slow the spread in the short term, can extend the life of a borderline hedge for a season or two, and may allow a light attack to stabilise. They do not cure the disease, they do not eliminate it from the soil, and they do not prevent recurrence. Once the inoculum is in your soil and in your neighbours' soil (spores spread by wind, water splash and contaminated tools), a replanted box hedge enters a garden that is already infected.

On Thanet this is compounded by geography. The salt-belt zone from Westgate-on-Sea CT8 around through Margate CT9, Cliftonville and Ramsgate CT11/CT12 sits in elevated coastal humidity for much of the year. Cylindrocladium buxicola germinates readily in humid conditions and in rain splash. What might be manageable with repeat fungicide applications in a dry garden in inland Kent becomes almost impossible to control on a Margate front garden that faces onshore in November.

Myth: the treatment will save it. Fact: it will not, on Thanet.

What people believe What is actually true
Spray with fungicide in spring; the new growth will be clean. The inoculum survives in the soil and on debris. New growth emerges into an already-infected environment.
Plant fresh box once the old hedge is out. The new plants are healthy. The soil inoculum persists for years. New plants in the same position become symptomatic, typically within two to three seasons.
My neighbour's garden is fine; the problem is something I did wrong. Blight spores spread by rain splash and wind. Neighbouring gardens share inoculum. One healthy-looking garden on the street does not mean yours is protected.

Myth 2: "Box tree moth only attacks weak or neglected hedges."

Cydalima perspectalis (box tree moth) arrived in the UK via ornamental plant imports from East Asia. It was first recorded in Kent in 2007, and Butterfly Conservation confirmed its establishment across most of England and Wales by the mid-2010s. On the Isle of Thanet it is now endemic: it does not require a weak or neglected plant to complete its lifecycle. It is a primary feeder.

The caterpillars feed inside the canopy, hidden by silk webbing, working from the inside out. A gardener inspecting the outside of a well-maintained hedge may see nothing wrong while the inside is already being stripped. The life cycle produces up to four generations per year in a warm Kent summer. At peak activity, a 10-metre run of box can be defoliated in four weeks. The fact that coastal Kent temperatures have been tracking slightly above the pre-2010 baseline means the moth routinely completes more generations per season in Thanet than it did when it first arrived.

The practical consequence: a box hedge that is well-fed, properly pruned, and showing no stress markers at the start of June can be bare by August. This is not a sign of neglect. It is what box tree moth does.

Myth 3: "Nothing gives you the same tight, formal look as box."

This one is genuinely understandable. Box has been the go-to formal edging plant for centuries for good reasons: slow growth, dense habit, tolerance of hard clipping, responsiveness to topiary. The idea that something else can substitute for it is hard to accept if you have only ever seen box used that way.

Three alternatives perform well on the Isle of Thanet, including in the salt-belt zone where many box hedges have historically been planted:

Neither box blight pathogen nor box tree moth affects it.
Ilex crenata 'Convexa' or 'Dark Green Spire' Either coastal or sheltered inland: Minster, Sarre, Birchington CT7 Dense evergreen holly with small leaves; takes hard clipping; performs reliably on Thanet chalk; not a host for box tree moth or box blight.
Osmanthus burkwoodii Sheltered inland: Birchington CT7, Minster, Sarre; walled or sheltered coastal gardens Slow, dense habit; holds formal shape with annual clipping; fragrant spring flowers. Less salt-tolerant than euonymus, so keep it off exposed frontages.

Of these, Euonymus japonicus is the most direct like-for-like on a Thanet coastal front garden. The compact varieties are dense enough to be almost indistinguishable from box at a glance and considerably more tolerant of the salt-wind exposure that is normal between October and March on the Thanet coast. The RHS lists it as one of its first-choice box alternatives for coastal sites.

A note on soil: Thanet's chalk and Thanet Sand geology drains freely, which suits euonymus well. The shallow chalk near the surface in parts of Margate CT9 and Cliftonville can be limiting for large shrubs but is not a problem for low formal edging at 30-60cm. Work in some organic matter at planting to give the roots something to establish into.

What I actually do when clients ask me about box

When someone calls about a box hedge that is going brown, I tell them this: I will quote to remove it, but if they are planning to replant with box I will not take the job, because the outcome is predictable and I do not want to be back in two years removing the replacement. The honest advice is to remove it, treat the soil boundary where it was with a layer of fresh topsoil or compost to dilute the surface inoculum, wait a season, and plant euonymus or ilex in autumn.

On conservation-area frontages in Margate Old Town, Cliftonville, or Broadstairs Old Town where the appearance of the hedge is subject to some visual sensitivity, Euonymus japonicus 'Microphyllus' (very small-leafed, dense, clips to a hard edge) is the closest visual match to box I have found. I have planted it on a listed building frontage in the Ramsgate town centre conservation area and it has held its shape for three years without any of the issues that ended its predecessor.

Removing a box hedge during nesting season

Box hedges are used as nesting sites by blackbirds, house sparrows and dunnocks in Thanet gardens, even when the canopy is partially dead from blight. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1 makes it an offence to intentionally damage or destroy an active nest. The nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August. If you are removing a blight-killed box hedge inside that window, carry out a visual nest check first: walk both sides slowly, look for alarm behaviour from adult birds, and listen. If there is any sign of nesting activity, delay the work or take a section at a time, leaving active sections untouched. Penalty on conviction: up to £5,000 per offence.
