Myth: leylandii can be cut back hard and it will bush out again. On Thanet chalk, it will not.
Every season I see the same outcome in Margate CT9 and Cliftonville gardens: a leylandii hedge that has grown beyond the owner's control, got hard-pruned back to the brown interior wood, and is now permanently patchy. The brown does not go away. The bare sections will not regenerate. Leylandii is the one common hedge species in the UK that gives you almost no second chance once you have cut past the green. Thanet chalk makes the situation worse by producing leylandii that grows unevenly and becomes unstable before it becomes genuinely unmanageable. Here is the straight version on why the myth is so convincing, and what the options actually are.
Why the myth is so convincing
Most UK hedge plants respond well to hard pruning. Yew can be cut back to bare stems and will reliably break from old wood. Beech, hornbeam, hawthorn and hazel all tolerate hard renovation cuts and come back densely. Holly regenerates from old wood with no difficulty. For gardeners who have experience with those species, the assumption that leylandii works the same way is entirely reasonable.
The assumption is also reinforced by how leylandii behaves when it is young. Trim the sides of a newly established leylandii hedge and it responds well, pushing back quickly with fresh dense growth. That responsiveness makes it look resilient. It is not. What you are trimming in year two or three is entirely new green tissue, and leylandii is very good at producing new green tissue from green growth. The difference between a young hedge in maintenance and an established hedge being cut to the wood is the difference between pruning and removal: the plant processes them completely differently.
Myth: “Cut it back hard and it will regenerate.”
Fact: leylandii has virtually no capacity to regenerate from old brown wood.
This is not a matter of degree: it is not that leylandii regenerates more slowly than yew, or that you need to be patient for a season or two. When you cut into the leafless interior of a leylandii hedge, the cut sections stay bare. The RHS is explicit on this point: if you cut back into older leafless growth, new growth will not appear from the bare wood. The guidance from UK specialist nurseries that grow and sell leylandii for hedging is consistent: there is no way of remedying brown patches caused by over-cutting, because leylandii hedges have little or no ability to regenerate from old wood.
The biology behind this is structural. Most broadleaved hedging plants carry dormant adventitious buds deep in their older wood, waiting for the right hormonal signal to break into growth. Conifers in general, and leylandii in particular, do not carry that reserve in the same way. The growth machinery is concentrated in the actively growing green tips and the cambium just below the surface of new wood. Strip that away and there is nothing left to regenerate from.
The practical implication is unforgiving: the only safe boundary for cutting leylandii is the edge of the existing green growth. You can remove up to a third of the current season's green in any one cut. You cannot touch the brown. If you do, that section is gone.
What Thanet chalk does to the problem
Leylandii on the Isle of Thanet faces a specific combination of stresses that make overgrowth both more likely and more damaging to deal with.
Shallow chalk profile and wind-rock. Thanet sits on the Margate Chalk Member overlying the Thanet Sand Formation. The topsoil over chalk is shallow, typically less than 300mm deep in many Cliftonville CT9 and Westgate-on-Sea CT8 gardens. Leylandii is a fast grower that reaches for height, but on a shallow chalk profile it cannot anchor deeply. The result is a hedge that grows tall and relatively top-heavy on a root system that wind-rocks. In exposed Thanet gardens, a leylandii screen planted for fast privacy in the 1990s often reaches seven or eight metres before the owner realises the base is moving. At that point the temptation is to take off the top hard. The top cannot regenerate.
Salt-wind desiccation. The prevailing south-westerlies carry salt spray across the coastal strip from Birchington CT7 through Margate CT9 and down to Ramsgate CT11/CT12. Leylandii on the windward face of a coastal Thanet garden routinely shows salt-burn browning: the outer foliage desiccates, dies back, and leaves a permanently brown face. Owners see the brown face and assume they can cut through it to encourage fresh growth from behind. They cannot. The brown face is already the outer green layer dying back; behind it is old wood. The salt-burn patch is permanent whether you cut it or not.
Growth rate and deferred maintenance. On a reasonably sheltered Thanet plot, leylandii can add 600mm or more of height per year in good growing conditions. A hedge planted as a two-metre screen in 1995 can be at five or six metres before it occurs to anyone to manage it seriously. At that height, the interior brown zone occupies most of the hedge's width. There is no safe hard-pruning route back from that position.
What to do if your leylandii is getting too tall
If the hedge is still within the green, there is a clear path. Leylandii can be reduced in height provided you stay within the active green growth at the very top. Specialist nurseries recommend removing no more than a third of the height at any one time, cutting just into green tissue and not into the bare leading stem below. For a hedge that is at, say, three metres and needs to be at two and a half: one cut to the green tips at two and a half metres, allowing the hedge to grow back into that shape over the following season. This works. It is the limit of what works.
For width: the sides can be trimmed hard only if green growth extends all the way to the cut line. If the green layer is thinner than 100mm on one face (common in salt-wind-exposed Thanet coastal hedges), there is no safe margin to work with. The right answer in that case is to accept the existing width, trim lightly to hold it, and plan for replacement when the hedge fails.

Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981: the nesting window does not pause for a difficult hedge
Even when a leylandii hedge is clearly damaged, leaning, or overdue for work, the legal calendar applies. Under section 1 of the WCA 1981, intentionally damaging or destroying an active nest is an offence: up to £5,000 per offence on conviction. The main nesting season in Thanet hedges runs 1 March to 31 August. The safe default cutting window is September to late February. If the hedge needs emergency structural work inside that window (say, storm damage or dangerous lean), a competent visual nest check must be done before any work begins. If the brown patches are already permanent
This is the honest part of the conversation. If your leylandii hedge already has large areas of bare brown wood, either from over-cutting or from salt-burn desiccation on a coastal Thanet site, those sections will not recover. The options are:
- Accept the appearance and maintain what is left. If the green portions of the hedge are structurally sound and still provide screening, you can continue to maintain the remaining green. The bare sections will not get worse if left alone, and the overall hedge shape can still be managed. This is a reasonable choice for an inland Minster or Sarre garden where the hedge is providing a windbreak and the brown patches are on one face only.
- Remove and replace. For a coastal Thanet garden in Westgate-on-Sea CT8, Cliftonville CT9 or Broadstairs CT10 where the hedge was the primary boundary screen, a leylandii that is significantly browned is usually better replaced than patched. The replacement species question is worth thinking about carefully. Leylandii was planted on Thanet for its speed; the species that actually thrive on this chalk-and-salt coast are different. - Professional reduction as a holding measure. In some cases a professional can stage a carefully managed reduction: taking height off over two or three seasons while staying just inside the green boundary each time, gradually bringing the overall volume down without triggering bare-wood exposure. This is technically possible but requires someone who knows the individual hedge well and commits to the multi-year programme. It is not a one-job fix, and it is not cheap on a tall Thanet coastal hedge where safe access at height adds to the cost of each visit.
The DIY boundary
Leylandii hedge work sits at the edge of what is sensibly DIY on the Isle of Thanet, and the edge is in a specific place: if the hedge is under two metres tall and you can reach the top without a ladder, you can manage it yourself with the right equipment (a quality 36V cordless trimmer with a sharp blade, cutting in dry conditions, staying strictly within the green). That describes a new or recently planted hedge being actively trained.
Once the hedge is over two metres, working at height introduces risks that a standard domestic step ladder does not address safely. A proper tripod work platform changes the calculation, but on a long Thanet boundary hedge where you are moving the platform repeatedly along the length, the physical demands and the time involved make professional management cost-effective by most measures.
A leylandii hedge that has already reached three metres or more, or that has visible brown patches, is not a DIY renovation job by any reasonable standard. A contractor can assess the green-zone boundary accurately, decide whether staged reduction is viable, and carry out the work at height safely. That is worth a conversation before picking up the trimmer yourself and creating a brown problem that cannot be undone.
